As part of the 24 credits necessary for a standard high school diploma, the state requires 7.5 elective credits, but doesn't specify what these must be in. On Brevard's requirements, however, they list several specific courses with explanations as to why a student must take them.

To graduate with a standard high school diploma, a student must earn 24 credits and achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent. the grade 10 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in Reading and Mathematics or attain concordant scores on either the SAT or ACT tests.

Students must earn a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for all cohort years and pass statewide, standardized assessments unless a waiver of assessment results is granted by the IEP team for students with disabilities. * Eligible courses are specified in the Florida Course Code Directory.

The 18-credit graduation options allow a student to earn a high school diploma in less time than the traditional 24-credit graduation option. Acceleration mechanisms allow a student to simultaneously earn high school and postsecondary credit.

9th to 10th grade = 5 credits: 1 credit must be English or math 10th to 11th grade = 12 credits: 2 credit must be English and 2 credit must be math and/or science 11th to 12th grade = 18 credits: 3 credits must be English and 4 credits must be math and/or science.
